Born in Bengaluru, she comes from an illustrious family in Kannada arts and theatre: her mother was veteran actress Bhargavi Narayan, her brother is actor-filmmaker Prakash Belawadi, and her daughter is actress Samyukta Hornad. She began acting at a very young age, appearing as a child artist in classic films such as Girish Karnad's *Kaadu* (1973) and *Bhootayyana Maga Ayyu* (1974).
Her major breakthrough in modern Kannada cinema arrived with Yogaraj Bhat's blockbuster *Mungaru Male* (2006), where her performance as the protagonist Preetham's (Ganesh) affectionate, witty mother earned widespread critical acclaim. This established her as the go-to choice for maternal and pivotal supporting roles across several landmark films, including *Gaalipata* (2008), *Moggina Manasu* (2008), *Pancharangi* (2010), *Googly* (2013), and *Bachchan* (2013).

Alongside her extensive filmography of over 70 films, she remains a prominent face on Kannada television, known for prominent roles in T. N. Seetharam's daily serials like *Manvanthara* and *Magalu Janaki*, as well as long-running soap operas like *Lakshana*.
